Can I Take Doxil While Breastfeeding?
At this time, it is usually recommended that women not breastfeed during treatment with
Doxil® (
liposomal doxorubicin). Due to the possible risks to the child, the manufacturer states that breastfeeding women should never take this medication. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding a child, you should talk with your healthcare provider about taking Doxil.
More Information on Breastfeeding and Doxil
Currently, no research has been done to see if Doxil passes through breast milk in humans. However, the nonliposomal formulation of
doxorubicin (
Adriamycin®) has been shown to pass through breast milk, so it is likely that Doxil does as well. Like most chemotherapy drugs, Doxil can be quite toxic, and an infant exposed to this medication through breast milk could develop serious problems.
Talking With Your Healthcare Provider
You should discuss Doxil and breastfeeding with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation and other treatment options, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
