Ovarian Cancer Home > Topotecan Dosage
Your healthcare provider will consider several factors when determining your dose of topotecan, such as how you respond to the drug, your chemotherapy regimen, and your height and weight. This product comes in capsule and injectable forms and is taken once daily for three to five days, every 21 days.
An Introduction to Dosing With TopotecanThe dosage of topotecan (Hycamtin®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your height and weight
- The type of cancer being treated
- How you respond to topotecan (especially whether you develop dangerous side effects)
- Other medications you are taking (your particular chemotherapy regimen)
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Recommended Topotecan DosageYour healthcare provider will base your topotecan dose on your body surface area (which is calculated using your height and weight). The dosage amount will vary, depending on your particular chemotherapy regimen, as well as the particular type of cancer being treated. Also, your dosage may need to be reduced (or given less frequently) if you develop dangerous or intolerable topotecan side effects, or if you have poor kidney function.
For small cell lung cancer, topotecan can be administered by mouth (in capsule form) or intravenously (by IV). For all other uses (see What Is Topotecan Used For?), only the IV formulation is approved. This does not mean that your healthcare provider cannot recommend the capsule form for other uses; it simply means it is not approved for such uses (and therefore, there are no clearly established dosages for such uses).
For treating small cell lung cancer or ovarian cancer, topotecan is usually given once daily for five days, every 21 days. For treating cervical cancer, it is usually given once daily for three days every 21 days.
