Melphalan Drug Information
Melphalan (Alkeran®) is a prescription medicine used to treat ovarian cancer and multiple myeloma in adults. It can be taken by mouth in tablet form or given intravenously (through an IV). Most people who receive chemotherapy treatment with this medication will develop some type of side effect, such as infections, bleeding, or anemia.
Because not everyone can safely use this medicine, it's important to fully understand melphalan's safety information before starting treatment; this includes things like possible drug interactions and side effects. Also, let your healthcare provider know if you have any other medical conditions, such as:
- Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
- Lung disease.
Melphalan is designed for palliative treatment. This means it can help relieve cancer symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease, but it will not cure the condition.
