Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

Are the Symptoms Ovarian Cancer or Another Disease?

To help find the cause of your symptoms, a healthcare provider will evaluate your medical history, perform a physical exam, and order diagnostic tests. Exams and tests that may be used to make an ovarian cancer diagnosis include:
  • Pelvic exam
  • Ultrasound
  • Blood tests
  • CA-125 assay
  • Lower GI series (barium enema) or colonoscopy
  • CT (computed tomography) scan
  • Biopsy
  • Surgery.
If a positive diagnosis is made, your healthcare provider will want to determine the stage of ovarian cancer (see Ovarian Cancer Stages). Staging is a careful attempt to find out whether the cancer has spread and, if so, to what parts of the body. Staging may involve surgery, x-rays and other imaging procedures, and lab tests. Knowing the stage of ovarian cancer will help your healthcare provider plan the appropriate ovarian cancer treatment.
